David Bowie - Flaming Idols
In the conservative climate of the 70's and 80's, Bowie was a glittering star of androgyny and gender non-conformity who inspired many young queers. He left a complex legacy that asks us to hold many versions of him: Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Major Tom, the Bowie who said he was gay in 1972 and said he was straight in 1983. The Bowie who took advantage of teenage girls when he was in his twenties and the Bowie who called out MTV's institutional racism in his thirties. He's gone now, but don't be too sad. As Bowie said at his 50th birthday concert, "I don't know where i'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring"
You might light this candle and look to Bowie for: courage to share your gender non-conformity, reinvention of identity, connecting with outer space.
